OLAPLEX… chances are if you’ve ever asked your hair stylist to dye your hair lighter then you’ve probably heard of it. And if your hair stylist didn’t suggest Olaplex? Run!!!
We first saw it boom across socials a few years ago as the reason Kim K could go from jet black to ice white blonde without totally frying her hair (still not advisable!). And since then it’s been a staple for all hair salons working with colour, especially blondes.
So what is Olaplex and how does it actually work?
Let’s start with a little bit of science. OLAPLEX is created with an active ingredient that works on a molecular level to seek out broken bonds in the hair which can result from harsh chemical treatments like bleaching and colouring.
An easy example to understand how it works, is to think of a single hair strand as a ladder. A lot of different factors, such as chemical treatments, hair colour, heat styling & environmental effects slowly damage the steps of the ladders causing them to snap. OLAPLEX actively restores these broken bonds and reconnects them both ionically and covalently. This means that broken or weak bonds, located anywhere on the hair shaft, are targeted. Short answer: OLAPLEX=healthier hair!
The first 2 steps of the OLAPLEX are Salon Professional only. The first step is mixed into the colour, as going lighter than your natural colour involves breaking your hair's bonds. When lifting out pigment, we are using a bleach to highlight the hair and during this process this causes swelling to the hair cuticle. This is when the OLAPLEX step 1 holds together the bonds to create healthy lifting with minimal damage. So we basically have OLAPLEX to thank for being able to go lighter with our colour without compromising the integrity of the hair.
OLAPLEX at Home: How you can reap the maximum benefits
If you’re wanting to try OLAPLEX before visiting the salon, OLAPLEX No. 3 Hair Perfector is the ultimate at home hair treatment. It doesn’t replace the in-house OLAPLEX steps, but we can guarantee you’ll love the results!
OLAPLEX No.3 is recommended to be used once or twice a week, depending on how frequently you are washing your hair, and how extreme the damage is. It’s important to lather the hair with No.3 for 10 minutes PRIOR to washing. No.3 will fill any of the broken bonds and smooth over the hair cuticle.
Pro tip: Dampening the hair prior to applying, you will use A LOT less product saving you money in the long run. Olaplex only has a minimum time of 10 minutes, so applying all over and leaving your hair in a bun before washing the next day will ensure MAXIMUM softness, shine and health.
